Ron Wilson shares his journey with filmmaking as a neurodivergent individual.
“My name is Ron L. Wilson. I’m 26 years old. Amongst many other things, I’m a filmmaker that has ADHD. Knowing that I’m ADHD is incredibly important to my approach to everything, especially filmmaking. I’m under the impression that my directing in particular is a little more rigid and hands on and specific than some others. I’m somebody that requires a lot of organization right out the gate, and I can be rather anxious. I want every detail figured out ahead of time, especially on my end. I don’t like surprises; some people are really good at going with the flow, but I gotta have that plan locked in. That way, when we do inevitably need to adapt to problems, I can. My brain can get a little scrambled, so I’ve found that learning to be transparent with crew members can go a long way.
The film industry seems to attract a lot of neurodivergent brains because of how much creativity is involved, but it also spits in our faces by being incredibly difficult to deal with and adapt to. It’s a funny dynamic, but I also want to make it very clear that just because you’re neurodivergent doesn't mean you can’t do it. You just need to know your strengths (and weaknesses) and then be able to communicate that to people as best you can. Don’t let anyone try and break your spirit.”
